Black clothing looks best when it is deep and even in colour. Over time, heat, harsh detergent and strong sunlight can make it fade to grey. A few small habits keep your black pieces looking new.
1. Wash inside out
Turn each piece inside out before washing. This protects the outer surface from rubbing against other clothes and the drum, so the colour and any print last longer.
2. Use cold water
Hot water loosens dye. Wash at around 30°C, or use the cold setting. It cleans everyday dirt well and is gentler on the fabric.
3. Choose a mild detergent
Pick a gentle liquid detergent and avoid bleach completely. If you can, use one made for dark clothes. Do not use more than the recommended amount, because leftover soap can leave a dull film.
4. Wash blacks together
Keep black and dark clothes in one load. Washing them with light colours can leave lint on them and may cause colour to transfer.
5. Dry in the shade
Strong sun is one of the biggest causes of fading, especially in Kerala’s bright weather. Dry your clothes inside out in a shaded, airy spot. Avoid high heat in a dryer, which can also wear the fabric.
6. Iron with care
If you need to iron, turn the piece inside out and use a low to medium setting. Never iron directly over a print.
